Hydrochlorothiazide

Diuretics

Description

Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill). It is used to help reduce the amount of water in the body by increasing the flow of urine. It may also be used for other conditions. The drug has been widely used to treat hypertension globally and is relatively very safe.

Mechanism of action

The primary site of action of thiazide diuretics is the distal convoluted tubule. At this site, inhibition of NaCl transport is caused leading to diuresis. Thiazide diuretics inhibit the Na+Cl- symport, perhaps by competing for the Cl- binding site.
