Pioglitazone – Oral anti diabetic

Oral hypoglycaemic agents

Description

Pioglitazone is a medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a condition where the body does not make enough insulin, or the insulin that it makes does not work properly. This can cause high blood sugar levels

Mechanism of action

Pioglitazone decreases insulin resistance in the periphery and in the liver resulting in increased insulin dependent glucose disposal and decreased hepatic gluconeogenesis. It activates the nuclear peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma), which leads to the increased transcription of a number of insulin responsive genes involved in the control of glucose and lipid metabolism.
